The Terrifying Reality of Domestic Violence in America

Every minute, nearly 20 people are physically assaulted by someone who claims to love them.
That’s more than
10 million women and men every single year enduring violence in their own homes.

This isn’t rare. This isn’t “someone else’s problem.” This is an epidemic.

The numbers should stop us in our tracks:

- 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men suffer severe physical violence, sexual assault, or stalking by a partner—often leaving them with injuries, PTSD, STIs, and a lifelong sense of fear.
- 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been slapped, shoved, or pushed by an intimate partner—acts many still don’t label as “real” abuse.
- 1 in 7 women and 1 in 25 men have been injured so badly they needed medical help.
- 1 in 10 women have been raped by an intimate partner. Data on male survivors remains painfully limited.
- 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men have survived beatings, burnings, or strangulation at the hands of someone they loved.
- 1 in 7 women and 1 in 18 men have been stalked to the point of living in terror—for themselves or their children.
- On an average day, domestic violence hotlines receive
more than 20,000 calls—that’s one cry for help every 4 seconds.
- When a gun is in the home, the risk of homicide skyrockets
500%.
- 19% of intimate partner violence involves a weapon.
- Women aged 18–24 are the most likely to be abused by a partner.
- Survivors are up to
twice as likely to battle depression and suicidal thoughts.
- Shockingly, only
34% of injured victims ever seek medical care—many out of fear or shame.

These aren’t just statistics.

They’re daughters hiding in closets. Partners sleeping with one eye open. Parents protecting children from the person who’s supposed to keep them safe.

Domestic violence steals lives—sometimes in an instant, sometimes slowly over years of terror.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

With awareness, action, and support, we can help survivors escape, heal, and reclaim the future they deserve.

You have the power to change the story.
